The Madonie are a mountain range in northern Sicily, about 70 km from Palermo. The main peak is Pizzo Carbonara (1,979 m), the second highest peak in Sicily after Mount Etna. Since 1989, the area has been protected as a Natural Park.
Due to their geological importance, the Madonie Mountains are part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks. They feature sedimentary rocks (limestone, sandstone, marl) dating back over 200 million years, often rich in marine fossils.
Bergi is located right in the heart of this natural ecosystem, in the municipality of Castelbuono to be precise.
The Madonie Park is the richest in biodiversity in Sicily and among the richest in the Mediterranean, with over 1,600 plant species. The climatic variety, from the coast to 2,000 metres, favours a diverse flora.
The symbol of the park is the Madonie fir (Abies Nebrodensis), an endemic species. The park is also famous for its monumental trees (giant holly trees, thousand-year-old downy oaks) and 65 species of wild orchids.
